Mariagaarde Institute

Pitched roofs

Phase 1 - Renewal of 1,700 sq. ft. of pitched roof

During the dismantling of the existing roof, it was determined that the old support structure was insufficiently strong. In close consultation with the client and the engineering firm, it was decided to build a completely new wooden support structure on top of the existing roof.

The renovated roof is composed of:

  • 1,700 m² sloping roof area
  • 24 cm of insulation in two layers of rock wool (8 + 16 cm)
  • a framework with rafters and battens
  • finishing with some 37,000 storm pans

This intervention restores the historic building to a sturdy, durable and energy-efficient roof that is ready for the future.

Working in an active school environment

A major concern with this project was the sensitive environment. The school remained in full use during the works, making safety and planning crucial.

  • Deliveries were scheduled outside of school hours whenever possible.
  • Crane activities were strictly limited to the defined site area.
  • In consultation with the school board, continuous coordination was carried out to minimize disruption.

The Mariagaarde Institute in Westmalle is a school site with a rich history. The first building was inaugurated in 1945 and has been a fixture for generations of students and teachers ever since. Nearly 80 years later, this building is receiving a thorough renovation of its pitched roof.

Phase 2 - Sarking roof with slates for the main building

After the renovation of the first building, phase 2 will follow, in which the roof of the main building will be renewed. Here, the existing roofing of 1,500 m² will be removed and replaced with a sarking roof, finished with new slates.

Craftsmanship and future value

The roof renovation of the Mariagaarde Institute illustrates how Tectum Group deals with complex projects: technically challenging, carried out in a sensitive environment, with maximum attention to safety and sustainability. In this way, a historic school building once again receives the protection it deserves and future generations can count on a building that will again last for decades.
