First, the existing dome covering, made of brass, was dismantled. Then the damaged sections of the steel structure were carefully restored to regain structural integrity. Finally, the paint coating on the steel dome structure was removed and prepared for application of a durable topcoat.
To create a sturdy support surface, a wooden shield of Ayous wood was placed on top of the steel structure. Special attention was given to the interior finish of the wooden planking. The edges of the planks, laid in a herringbone pattern, were beveled to maximize the level of finish.
Tectum Group has successfully completed a roof renovation project at the Royal Observatory in Ukkel. The restoration of 5 out of the 7 observation domes was part of the project. The performed work involved several aspects.

Brass panels were applied to the wooden shield as a finishing touch, providing an attractive and functional solution. The 5mm lead gutters on some of the domes were also replaced to ensure optimal water drainage. On a few other domes, the slightly sloping roofs were also replaced by brass panels, providing a uniform and durable roofing solution.
This major roof renovation has breathed new life into the Royal Observatory in Uccle and ensured that the observation domes are once again in perfect condition. Tectum Group has contributed to the preservation and enhancement of this historic site with skill and attention to detail.
