Project

Flemish Administrative Center Mechelen

Flat roofs

A Challenging Beginning

The VAC Mechelen's original roof, consisting of ballasted PVC roofing, had to be completely demolished. The challenge was to reuse as many materials as possible and ensure that the office building remained operational during the renovation, which was a complex task.

All demolished materials were carefully sorted on site and disposed of separately. Official certificates were issued by specialized recycling companies.

  • Ballast: the gravel that served as ballast was carefully vacuumed and removed by bulk truck. At a remote location, the gravel was washed for subsequent use elsewhere.
  • Roofing: the PVC roofing material was disposed of through partner RoofCollect and ground to be used as a new raw material.
  • Insulation: the original PIR insulation was inspected in cooperation with Buildwise and checked for its current insulation value, fire value, compressive strength and so on. Depending on these results, it is decided for which purposes the old insulation can be reused.
  • The aluminum wall caps were also broken down and disposed of separately for recycling.

100% recyclable roof

The new roof will have EPS insulation that can be easily recycled and reused when demolished. In addition, a new roofing system will be installed that will be fully mechanically fastened such that it can be recovered again at a later stage.

Green roof

In addition, the new roof will feature green roofs, contributing to improved water management and air quality. The green roofs are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also have numerous benefits in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency.

In short, the renovation of the roof of the VAC Mechelen is an important part of the larger renovation project. The new roof will not only contribute to a more sustainable future, but also to the comfort and well-being of the building's users.
