This project is being built in close collaboration with Wyckaert Construction Company, with Wyckaert responsible for site layout, logistics processes, emergency drainage system and project coordination. To minimize delays caused by weather, the roof is equipped with a movable tent. This year, this tent had a span of no less than 54 meters, making it the largest temporary roof covering in Europe. To work safely, in addition to collective fall protection, a lifeline was installed on the roof by subsidiary company Tectum Plus.
Three specialized teams were deployed:
A total of 26 people worked on the project. This approach with specialized shifts allowed the work to proceed efficiently. Each shift started with a time difference of about 2 hours to minimize waiting times.
This third phase of the roof renovation project at Volvo Trucks in Ghent has included a comprehensive range of services. First, the existing roof area of 9500m² was stripped of the old roofing and insulation, which were then carefully disposed of. In addition, the existing skylights were dismantled and removed to make way for new ones that provide better light and functionality. The heart of the renovation was the installation of a new roof package, using high-quality materials, including a vapor barrier from Alutrix, insulation from Rockwool Rhinoxx (thickness 60mm) and a mechanically fastened EPDM seal from Resitrix MB. Roof openings were also modified to accommodate new smoke vents and skylights, improving safety and work areas in the building. The execution of these various services was meticulously supervised by specialized crews, resulting in smooth operations and a high-quality final result.
During the 2023 construction season, the third phase of the roof renovation at Volvo Trucks in Ghent was carried out. It is part of an extensive renovation totaling 55,000m². The works will be spread over a period of 5 years, with each phase being carried out during the annual construction leave and consisting of an area of approximately 10,000 to 12,000m². Tectum Constructors is responsible for the demolition of the old roof surface and the installation of the new insulation and roof waterproofing.

A striking feature of this project is the mobile tent with a span of 54m. This tent provides protection from weather conditions which is beneficial for working conditions, quality of work and planning. As in the other phases, the tent and site equipment were provided by Wyckaert Construction Company.
Working with specialized crews and working with the same partners every year ensured that the project went smoothly despite challenging weather conditions. Thanks to continuous evaluations and discussions over the past few years, processes were optimized. Safety aspects were well managed and the project was completed within the set deadline.
