"Sustainability is in our DNA," begins Kris Bloemen, CEO of Tectum Group. Together with commercial director Yves Rosier, he looks back at the steps the company has already taken and its plans for the future. "We face enormous challenges as a construction industry. By 2050, our industry must be climate neutral. That's not nothing, but we believe it's achievable with the right innovations and collaborations."
"The first step toward a sustainable future is knowing where you stand," Kris explains. "That's why we have spent the last two years mapping our carbon footprint and formulating reduction measures. These help us make targeted improvements."
Kris talks enthusiastically about the initiatives Tectum Group has taken: "We have electrified our fleet, installed solar panels and we are actively working on waste sorting. But we want to go further."
"One of the spearheads is the switch to biogas for flame welding waterproofing layers. This will allow us to reduce rooftop CO₂ emissions by 14% to 28% compared to propane. Those are serious numbers," said Yves.
Tectum Group also innovates at the product level. "We are proud to have participated in the development of the first circular roofing system - BossCover Circular System, a 100% mechanically fastened system that can be easily disassembled and reused," Kris explains.
"At Tectum Group , we want to grow in a green way," Kris emphasizes. "Growing green means continuing to grow economically while reducing our carbon emissions. This is not an easy task, but one that we tackle with great conviction."
"Sustainability is not a solo game," stresses Yves. "Together with our purchasing department, we now also map the CO₂ emissions of our entire value chain. In doing so, we work with suppliers who, like us, are committed to long-term and sustainability."
"Sustainability also means investing in people," Kris says. He explains how Tectum University contributes to training and knowledge sharing inside and outside the company. "Through webinars and training courses, we help colleagues and customers develop further."
Social engagement is also important to Tectum Group. "Every year we raise money for good causes through various initiatives. Thus, every year we donate about a nice amount to projects chosen by our employees," said Yves.
"With our range of green roofs and water retention roofs, we contribute to biodiversity & "cool cities" in cities. This fits perfectly with our commitment to The Climate Roof, an Embuild initiative to make flat roofs climate-robust," Kris says.
At the OVAM headquarters in Mechelen, we carefully disassembled PIR insulation boards for subsequent use elsewhere. At the Delhaize in Wondelgem, we installed Recuperation insulation when renovating the roof. And on a building in Laakdal, we installed the BossCover Circular System.
"Through Embuild Limburg and POM Limburg, we were selected to enter the Boost Construction Innovators track." explains Yves. "Here we are supported in the development of our new service model combining sustainability and customer focus. That's all I can say about it for now." laughs Yves.
